  • March 17-18, 2005: UF SFB members traveled to Rowsell, GA to visit the healthcare division of Kimberly-Clark. Our tour included a general overview of KC Healthcare and Hertitage products, a teleconference and interactive rpesentation of Ballard Medical (a division of Kimberly-Clark) devices, lunch with UF alumni, a tour of the glove research facility, and several labs and manufacturing facilities. Thank you to Kimberly-Clark for allowing us to participate in this event!!!

  • February 19-25, 2005: E-Week! SFB will be conducting science demo experiments at the E-fair (Feb 22-23). For more information on E-Fair or other Engineers Week events, including the Engineering Leadership Forum and Engineering Extravaganza, visit the Engineers Week website.

  • February 15, 2005: Dr. Doug Vanderlaan of Vistakon visited UF. SFB sponsored an informal lunch with Dr. Vanderlaan for our members where he spoke of the transition from graduate school to industry and answered student questions. Dr. Vanderlaan also gave a talk that was open college wide about Vistakon, the contact lens industry, and particularly about the development of silicone hydrogel lenses. Thank you to Dr. Vanderlaan and all who attended his talk!

  • January 24, 2005: SFB group picture was taken for the webpage and for sending thank-you letters to our sponsors.

  • December 2, 2004: R&D employees from Medtronic Xomed, Inc. visited UF. Craig Drager, Vice President of R&D, gave a 45 minute presentation on Medtronic in general and several of their product lines and research interests. Several UF professors from the departments of Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and Pharmacy also presented their currect research. Student research was showcased in poster and abstract format for viewing between talks. A complete, finalized event program is available. Thanks to all who participated and made this event a success.
  • November 15-23, 2004: UF SFB collaborated with UF Materials Research Society (MRS) for the 3rd annual Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive. We surpassed last year's collection - so THANKS to all who participated in this event. All non-perishable food donations were delivered to St. Francis House and Salvation Army.
  • November 13, 2004: Several members of SFB met with Dr. John Sheets, Worldwide Vice President of R&D and Chief Technology Officer at Ethicon, Inc. Dr. Sheets spoke about what industry is looking for when hiring new employees, and also about the job opportunities outside of R&D for individuals with technical degrees such as engineering. For those who did not attend this meeting, notes and a presentation will be available at a later date. Be sure to check back!
  • May 7, 2004: In an effort to encourage interest in science, several UF SFB members taught enrichment labs at the Littlewood Elementary School to the entire 4th grade class. This was the second of hopefully many elementary school visits. A special thanks to Mrs. Hatcher, Ms. Kennedy, Ms. Hefner, and Mrs. Varner and all the 2003-2004 4th graders from Littlewood Elementary.
  • March 26, 2004: UF SFB travelled to Linvatec Corp in Largo, FL for an industry tour. Members that participated in this trip had the opportunity to tour manufacturing facilities and speak one-on-one with Linvatec employees.
